Weekly Summary of Task / Assignment

Week Eight’s task / assignment for me was simply doing research and gathering facts for both my attachment report and the report on "Issues surrounding the Building of an Autonomous Bibliography Building Agent". I also did some updating on the Robocup ’98 – Paris competitors’ list and the Robocup papers bibliography webpage maintained by our supervisor.

There were no problems faced in this week except when working on the Robocup Competitors’ list. Just for some recap – The Robot World Cup Initiative (RoboCup) is an international research and education initiative. It is an attempt to foster AI and intelligent robotics research by providing a standard problem where wide range of technologies can be integrated and examined, as well as being used for integrated project-oriented education. For this purpose, RoboCup chose to use soccer game as a primary domain, and organizes RoboCup: The Robot World Cup Soccer Games and Conferences

Currently, RoboCup has the Simulator League, Small Robot League, Full Set Small Robot League, which is 11 robots per team, Middle Size Robot League, Legged Robot League (Exhibition Games for 1998), Expert Robot League and the RoboCup Commentator Exhibition.

The problem faced here in this task was locating the website of the teams that had participated in games for information about them. Why do I say that it’s a difficult task is because not many teams had their information published in the Internet and that out of these websites, some of them are in foreign language which made it difficult for me to understand and gather data and facts from there. Having no other choice, I decided to locate the email address of the team leader or a member from the team and emailed my request to them. This certainly takes up a lot of time and there are no guarantees that the receiver will reply back.

On the part of my report writing for Project ABBA, I had gathered some information from the Internet throughout the week. Currently, I am still reading through them and abstracting some information from them. However, I feel that just by gathering information from a source is not enough therefore I have decided to make a trip down to the libraries to do more research after work for next week. I would be concentrating the uniqueness of a bibliographic record and also the three major topics – text mining, information retrieval and neural networks.

The other task not mentioned above was that I have recreated my homepage as well as the Industrial Attachment website. Updation to several pages in the Useful Links section were also made.
